Is It Better to Practice Yoga at a Studio or at Home? (A Slightly Biased Opinion)
August 4, 2026
I’ll admit it…
I’m probably the worst person to ask this question. Of course I think practicing yoga at a studio is worth it…I own one! 😄.
But this isn’t about convincing you that The Cycling Yogi is better than YouTube. It’s about explaining why so many people who want to make yoga part of their lives struggle to see lasting results on their own.
The truth is, yoga isn’t just something you do. It’s something you practice. And like any meaningful practice, consistency, guidance, and support matter. It’s about explaining why so many people genuinely want to make yoga part of their lives…and yet, months (or years) later, they’re still saying, “I really need to get back into yoga.”
Sound familiar?
Yes, You Can Practice Yoga Anywhere…
There are thousands of amazing yoga classes online. You can stream one in your living room, your basement, your hotel room, your backyard…the airport! (ok…maybe that’s a stretch! Or just my bitterness for long gate delays!)
But really….
Any yoga is better than no yoga.
Buuuuut….
Will you actually do it?
Not today or tomorrow.
I’m talking about three months from now…when work is crazy, the kids have practice, the dog threw up on the carpet, dinner still isn’t made, and Netflix is quietly whispering, “Just one episode…”
That’s where most home yoga routines quietly disappear.
Walking into a scheduled class changes everything. You’ve already made the decision.Your instructor is expecting you. Your classmates notice when you’re there…and they notice when they haven’t seen you in a while. That little bit of accountability often becomes the difference between wanting to feel healthier and actually becoming healthier.
And….almost nobody ever says after class, “I wish I hadn’t come today.”
Why Studio Yoga Gets Better Results
After years of teaching yoga, I’ve noticed that the people who see the biggest changes aren’t necessarily the youngest, the fittest or the most flexible.
They’re simply the most consistent.
That’s because consistency beats intensity almost every single time.
Whether your goal is reducing stress, improving flexibility, building strength, easing back pain, improving balance, or simply having enough energy to keep up with your life…those results don’t happen because of one amazing class. They happen because you keep coming back.
You Can’t Get Personalized Feedback From a Screen
Here’s another advantage of practicing yoga at a studio.
Your instructor can actually see you.
Every yoga teacher at The Cycling Yogi has completed at least 200 hours of teacher training, and many have continued their education far beyond that. We’re constantly watching your movement (not to judge you…but to help you.) Sometimes that means suggesting a different pose because of a shoulder injury or a modification. Or sometimes it means encouraging you to go a little deeper because you’re stronger than you think. And sometimes it’s simply reminding you to unclench your jaw. (WHOA…half the room usually needs that one. 😄)
Those little adjustments add up.
You move more safely.
You build confidence.
And you often make progress much faster than trying to figure it all out from a video.
Yoga Is About So Much More Than Flexibility
One of my favorite things about teaching yoga is watching people come in thinking they want one thing…
…and leave with something completely different.
People sign up because they want to touch their toes. A few months later they’re telling me…
“I sleep through the night now.”
“My back doesn’t hurt anymore.”
“I’m handling stress so much better.”
“I have more energy.”
“I actually look forward to working out.”
“I feel like myself again.”
Those are the transformations that matter.
Research continues to show that regular yoga practice can help improve:
- Flexibility and mobility
- Strength and balance
- Stress and anxiety
- Sleep quality
- Energy levels
- Focus and mental clarity
- Chronic aches and pains
- Healthy aging and long-term mobility
And really…those benefits spill over into every part of your life.
You hike.
You travel.
You play on the floor with your grandkids.
You carry groceries without thinking twice.
You keep saying “yes” to life.
That’s what we’re really training for.
Community Is the Secret Ingredient
Community is something YouTube will never be able to offer.
Humans simply do better together. We celebrate milestones together. We encourage each other through hard days. We laugh when balance poses don’t go as planned. (MANY!)
Some members come to The Cycling Yogi because they want exercise. Many stay because they’ve found friendships, accountability, encouragement and a place where they feel like they belong. That sense of community is hard to measure…
…but it might be the most powerful part of all.
Your Health Is Your Greatest Investment
We don’t think twice about spending money maintaining our cars. We replace our phones every few years, remodel kitchens, buy fancy coffee. (No judgment…I fully support good coffee.) Yet somehow investing in the one body we’ll live in for our entire lives often feels optional.
Here’s how I see it.
A membership isn’t just paying for classes. You’re investing in your future mobility, your strength, balance, mental health and your ability to keep doing the things you love.
(you’ve probably heard me say this before:
Mobility is freedom.
Because it is.
When you can comfortably get up off the floor, travel, hike, lift your grandkids, garden, carry groceries, sleep well, and move without constantly thinking about aches and pains…
Your world stays big. And that’s what we’re trying to protect.
More Than Just a Workout

Whether you’re brand new to yoga or have been practicing for years, we want you to leave every class feeling stronger, calmer, more capable, and more connected than when you walked in. Even better.
